This game has lots of secret caves hidden in spots that you can open up with a song or bomb, but usually, these secret caves just have a business scrub or a treasure chest with some rupees. The other problem in the world is variety of secrets. Crows chirping at night, the echoing panflute in underground caves, and the lack of music on the pathway leading up to the Temple of Time (only to be greeted by the temple’s chilling music) are all examples of this, and it makes the world feel a lot more real. However, I also commend Ocarina of Time for focusing on atmosphere in the simple things. Games like Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess greatly achieve world atmosphere by tying it to thematic elements in the story. The concept of these different gameplay styles keeps the gameplay fun but fair.Īnother great thing about the world itself is the use of atmosphere. The game cleverly uses this to its advantage by having young Link sections at the beginning of the game, adult Link sections in the middle, and a combination of the two towards the end. However, it does make the weight of young Link’s limitations feel a lot more impactful in the gameplay. They’ve played as young Link for a long time, so they’re used to the gameplay style and not unfairly put up against a difficulty spike.
